About the Artist
I am a figurative artist/painter, seeking to portray extremes of human emotion on canvas. As someone who has struggled with mental stability, personifying my fears and illnesses was therapeutic and can be a more effective way of communicating to those around me than words alone.
Stylistically, I am inspired by the unsettling; from the hell depicted in classical religious iconography to practical effects in modern horror movies. The extremes and distortion of facial expression form a focus of many of my pieces.
A common thread throughout my work is the use of a black background on my canvas. The base being black means that any colour added is painting the light not the shadow. The shadow blends into the canvas and I work from dark to light. I try to imply the enveloping darkness surrounding my subject and only defining where the light reflects.
The collection of my work currently being exhibited was born from a desire for creative escapism; escape from a corporate environment. Through the collection, I was able to express my frustrations with my situation at the time and continued the theme by personifying the emotions of my past.
